The Seven Heavenly Virtues #6: Purity of Heart

My Quiet Place

Purity of Heart

Purity of heart is clear-sighted. While lust weakens, purity strengthens us. When we have a pure heart, we can love each other for who God created them to be and sex can be a natural response to the love we have for our spouse. In order to obtain a pure heart, grace must accompany it. We need God’s forgiveness in order to overcome lust. If we try to develop a pure heart on our own, we will fail. Jesus forgave the adulterous woman and He forgives us too. God is the only one who can restore sexual sinners! Shame can often steer us away from purity. Confessing lust to the Lord helps us move past the sin. The pleasures that come from God bring more joy than fleeting sexual pleasures. In order to have a pure heart, we must address the impurity of our heart.
Purity of heart entails single-mindedness. Those with pure hearts seek to please God above all else. When sexual pleasure becomes an idol in one’s heart, our soul forsakes God. Impurity of heart does not just involve sexuality immorality, but anything that takes the place of God in our lives. It occurs when our something else is to blame for our happiness and not God. Purity of heart requires loving God more than His gifts. Lust focuses on the outward appearance and physical feelings, while purity of heart realizes that Christ's blessings flowing through us make us more beautiful than anything else can. Our hearts belong to God alone.

❊The Challenge
Instead of ignoring your impure heart, hand it over to God and ask Him to make His Son your soul's delight.
