The Seven Deadly Sins #6: Lust

My Quiet Place

Lust

As one who has been in a relationship and, frankly, one who is human, lust is something I have struggled with. When do my thoughts and actions pass love and into the realm of lust? I know sex is not bad in and of itself, but at what point exactly does lust pervert sex? I was surprised to find that, since it is a sin of the flesh and not the spirit, lust is not as serious a sin as the others. However, sins of the flesh can corrupt the spirit. Lust appears the moment the desire is not in the sexual partner, but in the sexual pleasure that person can give them. It seeks immediate sexual gratification alone. Lust is selfish. Sex in, its rightful form, is an expression of love. Lust can be present even in marriage when sex is no longer done out of pure love for one another. Sex without love will never satisfy!

The novel, The Rainbow, gives lust a unique perspective. Lust attempts to mis-shape the sexual partner. Sex is supposed to ultimately glorify God not oneself or another. In this story, after the engaged couple takes part in pre-marital sex, the woman cries. Although the man wants to see the woman again, “he had a love of his own living body”. This sin came between them and they acted like strangers. The lustful man loves her but loves himself more. Lust only leads to destructive consequences. Lust dies at dawn. In the morning, lust wants to hide away in solitude because of great guilt. Many are familiar with the process. When we give into lust, shame follows soon after yet we often give into lust again the very next evening. Lust is merciless and destroys the best of relationships. Love is at its finest when it is at its purest.

❊The Challenge
Consider how lust has perverted your love for others.
