A Fruit a Week Keeps You Meek
I recently began a spiritual disciple that I hope to continue the rest of my life and one which I hope you will consider trying. Select one Fruit of the Spirit to meditate on, study, pray over, and put into action every week. Do this with every fruit for 8 weeks, then, if you loved what God did, start over! I know an older man who has been repeating the cycle for years! There is always more things to learn and more ares of growth.
Prayer is the most important part of this exercise. We cannot produce these fruits in and of ourselves. That is why they are called Fruits of The Spirit. The Holy Spirit empowers us to do good deeds. The fruits are a gift for us given out of the grace of God. They are a blessing not a burden. If practicing love is a burden to you, then that means you are relying too much on your own strength. Ask God to help you to love and you will be surprised at the situations He may put you in. Ask God to teach you about love and you will be surprised at all the things you never knew about so common of a subject.
I would also encourage you to find a group of friends to join you in focusing on a fruit a week. Verbally reflecting on the lessons God has taught you will encourage you and them. I have been so blessed to hear the weekly stories of three other girls who took the challenge with me. Every girl's story is unique and different. Most weeks God will teach something totally different to one friend than what He teaches you. God knows how His children need to grow in each fruit and He knows each specific situation in which His children need to bear more of it.
God is faithful. He loves when we ask Him for wisdom and growth. He hears your prayers and He will answer them in the most unlikeliest of ways. Some weeks will be really hard. You will be humbled by how little you know and by how far from bearing the fruits you really are. Sometimes it will seem hopeless and impossible, but that just makes God's grace even sweeter. The fact that we cannot continuously bear fruit makes God's love seem bigger. Remember! Nothing is impossible with the Lord! He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. He is the one who produces the fruit within you! Partner up with the Spirit in the process in order to prevent discouragement.
When God stretches us or gives us hard circumstances in order to grow us in the knowledge of a certain fruit, we must respond with obedience and thankfulness that God answered our prayer and is making us more like His Son. Even though some weeks were harder than others, I have learned so much since putting this routine in my life. Every week has a God story and there are many more to come!
Pray over a different Fruit of the Spirit every week for eight weeks and see what the Lord does within you. After each week, reflect on what the Lord has taught you. Journal and share your experience with others.
