The Seven Heavenly Virtues #4: Hunger for Righteousness

My Quiet Place

Hunger for Righteousness

Compared to the sluggards, those who hunger for righteousness are completely satisfied. They do not stop seeking out true joy until they find it in Christ. I recently put to memory Psalm 63 and I was happy to find it in this chapter. Here, the psalmist’s “soul thirsts for” the Lord more than his body would if he was dying in a waterless desert. I want to have that kind of thirst for God! Even though I know He is the only one who can satisfy my soul, I still look to other things such as food and friends to make me happy. I look forward to future events when then and only then I can relax and be happy. I plan my next meals to motivate me to get through the next few hours. I decide what I am going to wear days in advance so I can feel confident and beautiful. After trying out other things to satisfy me, I finally realize that there is nothing compared to the true joy that comes when I seek the Lord. His “love is better than life” and His “right hand upholds me”.

I pray that the Lord will give us a burning desire for Him and constantly remind us that nothing else will fill my hungry soul but Him. Realize that this is a daily fight. Everyday, we must ask God to fill us with a hunger for Him because it can only come from Him. Spiritual yearning is not something we can muster up within ourself. We need the Spirit. We are prone to wonder for we are betrothed to Satan and need God to divorce us daily so we can experience fullness of joy.

{ You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water" Psalm 63:1-2 }

❊The Challenge

Pray Psalm 63 to God every morning. Ask Him to fill you with a desire for Him that far outweighs the desires of the flesh.
