The Seven Heavenly Virtues #3: Meekness

My Quiet Place

Meekness

I was very excited to study meekness. Beforehand, I had never thoroughly examined its definition. I had always equated it with humility. I love the image that characterizes meekness in which the lion lays beside the lamb. Meekness is bold and strong. Anger is fear and weak. Once again, I read the thoughts of the great C.S. Lewis. To display meekness is to forgive others. Lewis suggests taking the difficult task of forgiveness in baby steps. First, practice forgiving close loved ones. Then, move on to loving enemies. Lewis states that loving one’s enemy “does not apparently mean thinking them nice”. After reading this quote, I realized I have completely missed the point of loving others as myself. Even though I myself do things I dislike, it does not mean I stop loving myself. In the same way, even when someone else does something I hate, I should still continue to love them. What a unique way of viewing the Golden Rule.
Martin Luther King Jr. discusses the idea of loving the enemy as well. He goes as far to say that it “is the key to the solution of the problems of our world”. Authentically loving others is the only way to eliminate enemies altogether and prevent  internal and external wounds. In fact, ironically, love destroys our enemies by making them friends. Meekness in all circumstances requires “total surrender to God”. It takes a lot of effort in a depraved and selfish world; however, loving the enemy is the only way “we know God and experience the beauty of his holiness”. Wow! There is no greater motivation for anything than to know God more. Jesus forgave us when we were His enemy. May Christ’s meekness flow out of us.

{ Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. Matthew 5:5 }

{ But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.
1 Peter 3:4 }

{ But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace. Psalm 37:11 }

❊Question for the Comments
