The Seven Heavenly Virtues #2: Mourning

My Quiet Place

Mourning

When I think of the biblical use for the term mourning, I think of grieving over my own sins. I have never considered it to mean grieving over another’s suffering let alone rejoicing in their success. However, mourning requires that we push aside our own desires and feelings to see another person the way God sees them. It is emphasizing with another. It is wanting the best for someone even if you have to sacrifice what you want in the process. Sometimes this means genuinely rejoicing when someone else gets the job promotion that you wanted. It may mean feeling sorrow for someone else's sin instead of wishing harm upon them.

Many of you have read, watched the play, or seen the movie Les Miserables. In the beginning of the story, Jean Valijean has a humbling experience. Out of desperation and his sinful desires, Valijean steals money from another. The church Bishop discovers what he has done yet does not turn him in. May we follow the example of the Bishop. Although Valijean stole money, the Bishop did not think any less of the thief. In order to fight envy, may we never weaken our love for another human being. Let us thank God for what other’s have that we like and show grace to those who do what we dislike.

{ Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Romans 12:15 }
