Humility
The opposite of pride is poverty of spirit or humility. The easiest way to get rid of a proud heart is to replace it with a humble heart. The best way to receive a humble heart is to understand the humility of Christ. His selfless display on the cross is overwhelming and should immediately bring us to our knees! Unfortunately, we often loose the wonder of the cross because we either hear about it so often that it looses its weight or we do not think about it enough.
{ Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Philippians 2 }
Poverty of spirit is admitting one is completely worthless without God. It is viewing oneself as the sinful person they really are. Poverty of spirit is, ironically, confessing one is prideful. The first step of overcoming pride is to admit you are prideful. When we have an accurate view of our sin, it leads us to brokenness. We are perverted people. We are SO messed up! How dare we give ourselves the credit that only Christ deserves! He was the only man on earth who had the right to consider Himself above every other human and, yet, He consider Himself below every human. We so desperatly need God's grace in our lives every day! His grace is for every moment. Poverty of spirit is completely depending on God and realizing we cannot be completely happy apart from him.
I would say the characteristics of a humble person can be found in this chart by Nancy Leigh DeMoss. After reading this, I was amazed at all the areas of my life that need to change. I realized just how prideful of a human I really am. Nancy discussed this chart at a conference. After the message, the rest of the sessions were canceled as the Holy Spirit broke the audience. The people did not leave the room all night long as each person got right with God and with each other. If you think pride is not an issue in your life, it's probably a huge one.
May we confess to God that we are sinful, prideful people. May we be honest about our sin. May we thank God for the circumstances He puts in our lives that humble us. May love people with the right perspective of God and others in relation to ourself.
