Wise Word Wednesday

"A glad heart makes a cheerful face, but by sorrow of heart the spirit is crushed."
Proverbs 15:13

Another proverb--I just love them! There is so much wisdom and advice packed inside each verse. It is almost better to read the book only one verse at a time because even a chapter of Proverbs can be overwhelming. This proverb is very encouraging to me. Being a girl, and being a girl who lets her circumstances get to her, I often fall into what I like to call a "funk". I get sad and slip into The Pit of Self-pity. After I fall into this trap, only God can get me out.

After meditating on this verse, I found a pretty cool connection to the proverb I wrote about in the last Wise Word Wednesday post. One of the leading causes of "sorrow of heart" (Proverbs 15:13) is anxiety that "weighs him down" (Proverbs 12:25). BUT! A "glad heart" and a "good word" makes a cheerful face and makes him glad! Take heart: the Lord has overcome the world! Focus less on your problems and more on what the Lord has done and doing in the midst of yucky situations. We receive a glad heart by the good words of God. Fill your mind them! Think about things that are  true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, commendable, excellent, and worthy of praise. Your way of thinking can change the state of your heart.

Sadness of heart makes us more vulnerable to sin because our mouths reflect what is in our hearts. Let the joy that comes from the Lord make your heart glad so God's love can shine all over your face!  Even our facial expressions can point to the Lord!
